The mSALM technology was built to creating a cost-effective and adequate Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure that supports a Smart Agricultural Advisory and Feedback (SAAF) system. The mSALM technology combines three communication technology components with ability to reach smallholder farmers efficiently, effectively and at scale. The mSALM technology components are;
The Voice gateway is offered by africastalking, a SMS and Voice aggregator with presence in all the many East Africa countries of interest. The getaway is then integrated into msalm.org/vcc enabling farmer organisations to create interactive voice response campaigns for the members and develop virtual contact centres where members and knowledge brokers can get more information about farmers organisation and different technologies.
The msalm platform allows farmer organisations to create and publish survey forms that can receive responses through SMS or ODK smart phone app. This enables farmer organisations to collect data from farmers even in remote areas since the can send comma delimited SMS which are received and processed by msalm.
The learning platform is hosted on here, it allows farmer organisations to create training materials that can be accessed via smart phone using m-salm App. The training materials can be created in local language and can include quizzes and exams to evaluate the understanding of the user.
